About AMP Athletics Track Club
The Academy for Maximum Performance Track Club, “AMP,” offers competitive athletic
training to elementary, middle, and high school students in Manatee and Sarasota Counties.
Students range in age from 7-18 years old, and primarily come from low economic to moderate income communities. AMP is affiliated with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), one of the largest,
nonprofit volunteer sports organizations in the United States dedicated exclusively to the
promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs.
AMP started in late 2014 with the personal financial investments of Coaches Sheldon Cantrell & Rod Miller, one interested family, and a goal of reaching 15 youth to participate in the
2015 track season. Within just three weeks, through word of mouth recruitment initiated by the participating family, 23 youth and two young adults had registered to participate.
Demographics of participants included 7 males and 16 females; 23 African-Americans, 1 Hispanic, 1 Caucasian. Miller & Cantrell's purpose is to prepare student athletes for life's journey through the disciplines of athletic training, while promoting positive change as leaders in their community.
